Research

The research I conducted for my Ph.D. was on Kim Stanley Robinson’s Mars Trilogy, and can be found here. The sciences of those novels, and the scientists who stand as their representatives, informed a method of reading which adopted individual sciences as guides to a series of phenomenologies of the Martian planet. I claimed that each scientific experience of the Martian planetext (planet-text) formed a unique and different path down onto the red planet, and that the novels can be read on these terms. My study was therefore also a phenomenology of the reader’s experience of science fiction.
